I often hear people say or see people write on Facebook things like, "Drinking a Dr. Pepper on my front porch on this lazy Sunday afternoon. Can't get much better than this." or "Snuggling on the couch with my hubby and kiddos watching a movie. Does it get any better than this?"
I want to answer and say, "Yes it does and his name is Jesus and nothing compares to the greatness of knowing Him (not your children or your spouse and definitely not Dr. Pepper!) and one day fellowshipping with Him forever" (Philippians 3:8).
Do we ever write on Facebook, "Lying in bed in pain again, but I'm reading the word of God and am so encouraged. Can't get much better than this! (except for heaven of course)"? We, myself very much included, just don't get it, do we? We can't get over this world--our stuff, our family, our friends, our body, our abilities, our desires. It's everything to us, but it reality it's nothing.
"Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." Matthew 6:19-21
When I hear phrases like, doesn't get any better than this, in reference to things of this world I can't help but think of this passage. Our treasures are often much more than money or stuff. They are the things that consume our time, energy, and thoughts.
Where is our heart? As wonderful as family and personal relationships are, can they truly satisfy us? They won't last forever, but Jesus will and we will if we follow and serve him with our lives. Oh, how we need to find our joy in Christ...He is our great reward!
Lord help us, "look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal. 2 Corinthians 4:18
